MikesCommunity is a web site dedicated to modern Scottish ceilidh dancing. It's designed and run by Mike Scott who lives in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The original version of MikesCommunity went online in April 2001. In those days, it was a fairly radical site. But times changed and the old site began to get a bit long in the tooth. It was based on PHP-Nuke which uses the PHP language.
The language and PHP-Nuke were very vulnerable to attacks by hackers. MikesCommunity itself was hacked several times. Over the years, improvements were made to the PHP language to make it more secure. Unfortunately, though, these very changes caused large parts of MikesCommunity to stop working. The cure was worse than the disease! Eventually, only the diary remained. However, since this was the mainstay of the site and in widespread use, MikesCommunity 1.0 hobbled on.
And so it came to pass that Mike realised that a new site was needed - one written from scratch in a modern programming language. He set out to do that but it proceeded in slow fits and starts and his most ardent supporters began to lose faith in it ever seeing the light of day.
However, the final straw came in April 2010 when even the diary stopped working. This caused much wailing and gnashing of teeth amongst the ceilidh-ites. Something had to be done, and done quickly, before the faithful deserted to the likes of Facebook and Google groups!
Finally, after much prophesying, MikesCommunity 2.0 was born!
